Proxy Editing Workflow for Creator Video
Create, verify, attach, switch, share, relink, and retire editing proxies without confusing them with the original camera masters or final export media.
A proxy is a lower-resolution editing copy, not a replacement master. It improves responsiveness only when the editor can maintain an unambiguous relationship between proxy and original, and the final delivery returns to the intended full-resolution media.
The workflow therefore begins with source integrity and ends with an explicit export check.
1. Freeze source identity
Copy camera media into the project structure, verify file count/duration and keep it read-only where practical. Do not rename or reorganize halfway through generation. Record camera card, clip name, start time, frame rate, audio channels and checksum when risk warrants it.
2. Create compatible proxies
Adobe defines proxies as low-resolution copies for editing performance. Premiere's January 2026 workflow offers Half frame size and ProRes QuickTime Proxy as defaults, while permitting alternatives. It can create proxies only for supported online video clips without captions; choose a preset the collaborating machines can decode.
3. Verify attachment
Toggle proxies on/off at a distinctive frame, check duration, frame alignment, orientation, pixel aspect and audio sync. For externally created proxies, Premiere's Attach Proxies workflow links them to selected full-resolution project clips; test automatic matching before batch attachment.
4. Share the right package
A remote editor may receive proxies plus the project and manifest, while the finishing editor retains originals. Record which files are proxy, which are source, and who owns relinking. Never label a low-resolution copy as camera original.
5. Reconnect and export
Bring originals online, disable/toggle proxies and inspect full-resolution frames before colour, effects, reframing and final QC. Adobe says Premiere exports from full-resolution media by default even while proxies are enabled; selecting Use Proxies explicitly changes that. Confirm the chosen path in export settings and inspect the rendered master.
Proxy manifest
For each source record original path/hash, proxy path, preset, dimensions, codec, creation date, audio layout, attachment status, owner and final relink result. The manifest makes a fast workflow auditable rather than fragile.

Frequently asked questions
Are proxies used in the final Premiere export?
By default Premiere uses full-resolution media even when proxies are enabled. Using proxies for export requires an explicit export option.
Can I delete originals after making proxies?
No. Proxies are editing derivatives. Preserve verified originals for finishing, archival and future exports.
Why will a proxy not attach?
Identifiers, duration, frame rate, dimensions or audio-channel mapping may not match the source as expected. Inspect the exact attachment error and regenerate a compatible proxy if needed.
