How to Choose Video Editing Software: Test the Whole Delivery
Choose a video editor by project type, source media, hardware, organization, collaboration, captions, audio, interchange, and final delivery.
Video editing software must do more than play a timeline. It has to identify the source media, keep it attached, remain responsive on the actual computer, exchange work with collaborators, preserve captions and audio, and produce the required master without a last-minute format surprise.
Choose with one controlled mini-project, not a feature-list vote.
Define the delivery first
Write the target duration, resolution, frame rate, colour/HDR state, audio channels, captions, aspect ratios, review path and deadline. Then inventory every source codec, variable-frame-rate phone file, still, screen recording and external audio track.
Hard-gate the computer
Check the current version's exact requirements. Adobe's April 2026 Premiere requirements distinguish minimum HD specifications from recommended HD/4K resources and include processor, OS, memory, GPU, storage and network guidance. A successful installation is not proof that the real codec plays well.
The 30-minute edit trial
Use one phone clip, one dedicated-camera clip, separate audio, title, caption correction, colour adjustment and export.

Collaboration and interchange
Adobe says Team Projects stores/manages project state in the cloud, while each collaborator still needs access to the same media. Productions uses shared or mirrored media with smaller linked project files. Ask whether your team needs simultaneous timeline work, review comments, locked ownership or simple file handoff.
Test AAF, XML, OMF, EDL, consolidated media or stems only if the receiving workflow uses them. Premiere's supported exports include several interchange formats, but support does not guarantee every effect or edit translates.
Score recovery, not only speed
Close and reopen; disconnect and relink; switch proxy/full-resolution; open the delivery file; and move the project to a second user or machine where permitted. Score time, missing assets, unsupported effects and required accounts. The best editor is the one that completes and recovers your real delivery.
