Open-back versus closed-back is a workflow decision before it is a sound preference. The enclosure controls how freely sound crosses the earcup, which changes leakage, isolation, heat, and how safely the headphone can be used near a microphone.

What the enclosure changes

A closed earcup limits acoustic exchange through its rear shell. An open mesh allows more exchange. This does not make one design inherently professional; it changes the conditions under which the driver and ear interact.

Recording and overdubbing

  • Two-pair workflow: closed for tracking; independently auditioned open or closed reference for mixing.

A/B test without fooling yourself

Match playback levels, use the same output, and compare at normal working loudness. Test leakage, comfort after an hour, bass decisions, vocal level, reverb tails, clicks, and panning. Finish on speakers or another known system. The result should be a documented workflow, not a memory of which demo sounded bigger.
