How to Light a Small Creator Studio
Design a controllable one- or two-light creator setup using subject position, light size and distance, spill control, colour consistency, safety, and a repeatable exposure record.
A small room rarely needs more light everywhere. It needs control: a repeatable face exposure, a background that does not compete, and fixtures that fit safely outside the frame.
Begin with one soft key. Add a second light only when the first setup reveals a specific shadow, contrast or separation problem.
Create the lighting map
Mark subject eye line, camera, background, windows, reflective surfaces, outlets and walkways. Choose whether daylight is fully excluded, intentionally used or treated as a changing variable.
Place one key
Put a diffused key above eye level and off camera axis. Move position and modifier before increasing output. Watch glasses, skin highlights, background shadow and microphone/boom shadows. Keep stands weighted and cables secured.
Control rather than multiply
Use distance, angle, diffusion, flags or dark room surfaces to shape spill. A reflector may fill the shadow side without another powered fixture. Add a second light for a named job such as background separation, not because a diagram labels it fill.
Read specifications carefully
Elgato documents Key Light at adjustable 2900–7000 K, up to 2800 lumens and CRI above 94. Those figures describe one fixture's controls and manufacturer rating; they do not prove flicker-free output, colour matching or sufficient exposure in every modifier/distance. Test at the intended frame rate and shutter.
Save the repeatable state
Record floor/desk marks, subject distance, light height/angle/distance, modifier, intensity, colour setting, ambient-light state, camera ISO/aperture/shutter/white balance and a reference frame. Recheck skin, background, glasses and flicker after every change.
