Audio Interface vs Mixer for a Home Studio

Choose between an audio interface, mixer, or mixer-interface by multitrack capture, live routing, cue mixes, computer dependence, and recall.

An audio interface converts signals for a computer. A mixer combines and routes signals for listeners and destinations. Modern products can perform both jobs, so the useful question is not which label wins—it is where the mix happens and which channels reach the recording software separately.

Start with the signal diagram. A USB socket on a mixer does not prove it sends every input as an isolated track.

Draw two maps

Map what performers hear during the take, then map what the DAW records. Mark each source, monitor mix, speaker, stream, recorder, and computer return. If a device sends only the stereo main mix over USB, later balance changes cannot recover isolated inputs.

Interface-first architecture

A compact interface puts conversion and computer recording at the centre. Focusrite documents the Scarlett 2i2 as a 4-in/2-out device when loopback inputs are counted, with two analogue microphone paths, direct monitoring, balanced outputs, and one headphone output. That is a clear small-session topology, not a live-console replacement.

Use interface-first when tracks need to stay isolated, DAW automation and plugins build the mix, and the computer is expected to be present.

Mixer-first architecture

A mixer exposes channel gain, level, pan, mute and routing for fast live control. Some mixers include recording interfaces; others send only a stereo mix, and some multichannel models expose many USB channels. The exact manual—not the number of faders—defines recording capability.

Use mixer-first when rehearsals, small performances, multiple monitor feeds, or computer-independent operation are central. Record a clean isolated path when later repair matters.

Choose the architecture whose failure mode you can manage.

  • One or two sources, isolated DAW tracks, compact desk: interface-first.
  • Many live sources, rapid hands-on balance, no-computer resilience: mixer-first.
  • Live show plus multitrack archive: documented hybrid with enough pre-fader USB channels.
  • Several musicians: verify independent cue buses and headphone distribution.
  • Hardware synth workflow: count stereo inputs, MIDI, sends/returns and recall before choosing.
