How to Choose a DAW: Run One Real Project

Choose a DAW by completing the same recording, MIDI, arrangement, mix, collaboration, and recovery test instead of comparing feature lists.

A DAW becomes the memory of a music project: recordings, MIDI, edits, instruments, automation, routing, plugins, and versions. Choosing one from a feature grid misses the cost that matters—how reliably you can finish, reopen, and hand off a real song.

Use the same 45-minute test project in each serious candidate. A fast first impression is less useful than a recoverable export and a project another machine can open.

Hard gates before creativity

Verify the exact computer, operating system, processor architecture, audio driver, control surface and plugin formats. Ableton's current Live 12 requirements, for example, specify supported systems, processor constraints, memory, disk and recommended audio hardware. Requirements can change, so date the check.

The 45-minute project

Build eight bars that include one recorded microphone or instrument, one MIDI instrument, imported audio, tempo change, comp/edit, automation, send effect, group or bus, and a stereo export. Time how long it takes to correct a mistake, not only to create the first loop.

  • Record and monitor without an accidental feedback path.
  • Edit timing and one performance choice non-destructively.
  • Automate a level and effect send.
  • Freeze/bounce or otherwise reduce a heavy instrument.
  • Export a mix and stems with clear names.
  • Close, reopen and verify every asset.

Portability is a feature

Ableton documents that a Live Set normally stores references to media; Collect All and Save copies eligible media into the project, but third-party plugins still must be installed separately. That makes a useful universal test: move the project folder to another user account or machine and list every missing dependency.

Export consolidated audio or stems for collaborators who use another DAW. Preserve tempo, sample rate, start point and a reference mix.

Collaboration and longevity

Ask who exchanges projects with you, which DAW/version they use, whether licences permit the workflow, and how revisions are compared. A shared DAW reduces friction, but audio/MIDI exports and documentation remain the durable handoff.

Check vendor release notes, support history and the method for opening old projects. Do not assume a cloud sync folder alone creates a safe collaborative project.
